It seems the “national model” is in big trouble—Anthropic’s underhanded tactics are starting to work, and the Chinese Cyberspace Administration is investigating DeepSeek and Moonshot Dark Side
Previously, Anthropic publicly accused DeepSeek and Moonshot Dark Side of crossing the line of “data not leaving the country” during the process of distilling Claude’s capabilities, claiming that the sensitive user data might have been handed over to Claude.
It’s reported that China’s National Cyberspace Administration is investigating DeepSeek and Moonshot Dark Side. The Cyberspace Administration previously summoned seven Chinese AI companies named in Anthropic’s report, and then shifted the focus of the investigation to DeepSeek and Moonshot Dark Side. Anthropic’s report states that distillation activities related to Moonshot Dark Side saw more than 23 million interactions from May to July. In one 10-day period, nearly 300,000 Kimi user requests were directly forwarded to Claude. Activities related to DeepSeek, meanwhile, exceeded 12.1 million interactions within a 14-day period in July, with some user requests forwarded to Claude Opus.
The data forwarded by Moonshot Dark Side includes internal corporate code, still-valid login credentials, and surveillance data from Chengdu uploaded by a user whom it judged may be related to the People’s Liberation Army. The latter involves hundreds of cameras, including some near military facilities and around state-owned enterprises. Among the requests forwarded by DeepSeek are tasks for developing products within the public security system, involving using identity card numbers to match individuals’ movement trajectories and police records.
