Michael Burry ignores AI stocks and bets on copper.. what is the reason?
The American investor Michael Burry confirmed that he largely ignores the hype surrounding AI stocks.
In a post via his blog on Substack, he revealed an investment in Ero Copper, a company specialized in copper and gold mining, noting that the expansion of AI data centers will require large quantities of copper.
Burry relied on data from Thorsten Slock, the economic expert at Apollo, showing a decline in major copper discoveries, while it takes about 18 years to develop a new mine before production begins.
Estimates from J.P. Morgan indicate that a large AI data center may need up to 50 thousand metric tons of copper, while data centers could consume around 475 thousand tons by 2026.
As for Ero Copper’s stock, it has risen by more than 104% over the past year, and by about 21% since the beginning of 2026.
Thus, Burry’s copper investment comes at a time when demand for the metal is increasing alongside the expansion of AI infrastructure and data centers.#StakeStone #
