According to Tom's Hardware, the startup Starcloud, backed by NVIDIA, plans to deploy Bitcoin mining ASICs aboard its second spacecraft, with launch scheduled for later this year. The operation would make the company the first to mine Bitcoin in space, its CEO, Philip Johnston, said on September 21. Johnston noted that ASICs cost about 30 times less per kilowatt than GPUs, citing a 1 kW ASIC for $1,000, versus $30,000 for NVIDIA’s B200. This cost advantage is particularly appealing for computing operations in space. Starcloud-2 is presented as the company’s first commercial mission.
