After the victims paid, they discovered that the tokens received were actually counterfeit and worthless. After the case was exposed in the television program “Plaats Delict,” police identified the suspects through tips from viewers. The two men are a 24-year-old man from Geleen and a 45-year-old man from Leiden. During the search, the first suspect’s residence was found to have firearms and drugs; he has been detained for 14 days. The second man has been released but remains a suspect in the case. Police urge the public to be cautious when making cryptocurrency payments and to avoid using payment methods they are not familiar with.
