The ECB has launched Pontes — a platform for wholesale blockchain settlements in central bank money.

This is a bridge between the blockchain and the traditional financial system. Banks will be able to settle using the central bank’s “digital money”, not only stablecoins with credit risk.

13 institutions have already joined: Deutsche Bank, Santander, Société Générale, KfW, the European Investment Bank. Plus four DLT platforms, including Clearstream.

Currently it operates on weekdays from 8:00 to 16:00 CET. By 2028, the ECB plans to expand it to 22.5 hours, then to a 24/7 mode.

The ECB is not fighting tokenization, but embedding it into its infrastructure. Cautious, but systematic. This is an alternative path compared to the American one, where the focus is on private stablecoins.

What do you think: will Europe speed up, or will banks be cautious? 👇
