September 22 A-share Close Review: Index Opens High, Then Falls, Trades in a Narrow Range with Divergence; Total Turnover on Both Markets Exceeds 2.1 Trillion!

On September 22, the A-share market overall saw an intraday pattern of opening higher and then falling. In the morning, the market briefly surged; during the session, the ChiNext Index’s gain nearly approached 2%. However, after midday, upside momentum gradually weakened. Toward the close, all three major stock indexes turned negative collectively. The early gains were almost entirely wiped out, and the contest between bulls and bears intensified.

By the close, the three major indexes showed mixed performance: the Shanghai Composite Index closed up 0.06%, the Shenzhen Component Index closed down 0.05%, and the ChiNext Index closed up 0.01%. In terms of trading, the combined turnover of Shanghai and Shenzhen for the full day exceeded 2.1 trillion yuan. Market activity remained at a high level. Stock performance was mixed with more declines than gains, and more than 3,000 stocks across the board finished lower.

As for sectors, intraday rotation and differentiation were evident. The computing hardware sector led the pack with an early high opening and gained strongly in the morning, but many of the underlying stocks subsequently pulled back after topping out, with reduced follow-through. The innovative drug sector performed impressively against the trend and became one of the main storyline directions of the day’s market. The culture and media sector maintained strength, staying highly active throughout the day. In the afternoon, sectors such as automobiles and power saw localized bursts of upside. Within the real estate sector, parts diverged; among them, Wo Ai Wo Jia successfully closed with two consecutive daily limit-ups. On the downside, the tourism and hotels sector and the port shipping sector both remained weak throughout the day, leading the declines on both exchanges.

Overall, today’s market, after being at a higher level, saw a choppy consolidation. Earlier hot sectors showed clear divergence. There are signs of capital rotating between “high” and “low” themes. In the short term, investors should continue to monitor the sustainability of trading volume and the strength of the follow-through in the main sectors.
