šŸ”¦ $LITE is up 4% — and the bigger story may be what comes next for AI infrastructure.

AI scaling is hitting a new challenge: moving massive amounts of data between chips efficiently. That’s where optical technology could become increasingly important.

At ECOC 2026, Lumentum announced a demonstration with Qualcomm and Corning focused on next-generation optical connectivity:

1ļøāƒ£ Optical die-to-die interconnect
Qualcomm’s D2D interface, Lumentum’s VCSEL links and Corning’s multimode fiber are being combined to explore higher-bandwidth connectivity for AI scale-up systems, with the potential to reduce power and latency.

2ļøāƒ£ 8-wavelength DWDM laser module
The module delivers around 250 mW per wavelength, with roughly 12 W total optical power. It is designed as an external laser source for CPO/NPO applications, with availability expected in the first half of 2027.

šŸ“Š Lumentum’s numbers are already getting attention.

Fiscal Q4 revenue reached $1.01B, up 109% year over year, while the next-quarter revenue outlook is $1.225B–$1.275B.

But there’s an important catch: these are still demonstrations, not commercial shipments. Lumentum also faces a high valuation and significant revenue concentration among a relatively small number of hyperscale customers.

The bigger question is whether AI data centers are gradually moving from copper-heavy connectivity toward optical solutions.

Could optics become one of the next major AI infrastructure themes?
