September 21 evening news | Oil prices fall four straight days + ETFs rush in, BTC breaks through 85,000, altcoins soar across the board
BTC closed today around 84,500–85,000. During the afternoon session in Asia, it briefly touched 84,174, then continued to rally in the evening to 85,004, up more than 5.5% over 24 hours. Ethereum rose even more sharply, breaking above 2,700, up more than 6% in 24 hours. Altcoins were the stars today—NEAR Protocol jumped more than 22%, Avalanche rose over 17%, and Sui surged more than 14%.
When I wrote last Friday’s morning report, I said 82,000 was the real test. If it couldn’t break through, it would get rejected again. Today it went straight to 85,000—82,000 didn’t even put up any decent resistance. That’s how the market can be sometimes: you think it’s going to rest, and it slaps you in the face instead.
Probability view: I think the upside probability is slightly higher. But 85,000 isn’t the end point or the starting point—whether the weekly chart can hold above the 50-week moving average is the dividing line that determines the quality of this rally.
Three things are pushing it up
First, oil prices are down for four straight days, and inflation expectations are cooling off.
Brent crude drops for the fourth consecutive trading day, breaking below the $100 level. WTI closed down 1.31% at $95.26 per barrel, while Brent was at $99.72 per barrel.
The trigger was signals of indirect contact talks between Iran and the U.S. during the UN General Assembly. Trump said he may be willing to meet with Iran’s president. Iran’s president plans to deliver a speech at the UN on Wednesday. Repairs to Saudi Arabia’s oil pipeline are also progressing steadily. The geopolitical risk premium that was priced in earlier is being gradually unwound.
Oil price down → inflation expectations cool → pressure for rate hikes eases → risk assets rise. This chain reaction is finally starting to turn toward the better.
Second, 433 million flowed into ETFs in a single day—institutions are buying with real money.
Net inflows into the U.S. Bitcoin spot ETFs on September 18 totaled $433 million. Fidelity’s FBTC saw $310.7 million in a single day inflow, and BlackRock’s IBIT saw $108.4 million inflow. Ethereum spot ETFs also recorded net inflows of $143.8 million. Total net assets of Bitcoin ETFs rose back to $102.53 billion, again reclaiming the $100 billion+ level.
Third, the shorts were blown up: the $500 million short positions were forced to close.
In the past 24 hours, liquidations across the whole market were close to $600 million, including $505 million of long/short liquidations on the short side. After price broke through a key level, shorts were forced to cover and buy, further amplifying the rally. This upswing has both real ETF buying and forced short covering—those two forces stacking together is what created today’s gains.
Section 1: Macro news backdrop
1. The Fed: After the rate hike is delivered, the market waits for officials’ statements
After the September FOMC rate hike of 25 bps was delivered, the market digested the outlook for the subsequent path. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield peaked intraday at 5.014% and ultimately closed at 4.997%. The 2-year U.S. Treasury yield fell back to 4.752%.
This week, at least 8 Fed officials will give speeches. The market will look for clues on whether there will be a rate hike in October. CME currently shows the probability of an October rate hike is around 50%.
2. Geopolitics: Iran and the U.S. release easing signals, and oil prices remain under sustained pressure
Trump said he has “made a decision” regarding Iran’s issue and may be willing to meet with Iran’s president. Iran’s military has also stated: any U.S. attack will lead to retaliation from Iran. Signaling willingness to negotiate while maintaining a military posture—this is a classic “fight while talking.”
But the market chose to trust the “talk” side first. Oil prices have pulled back for four straight days, and the geopolitical premium is fading.
3. Traditional markets: U.S. stocks mixed; chip stocks remain strong
Last Friday, U.S. stocks were mixed. Nasdaq rose 0.39%, S&P 500 rose 0.17%, and Dow fell 0.19%. SanDisk jumped 10.99%, Micron rose 3.92%, and Nvidia rose 1.34%. Chip stocks continued their recent strength.
Gold rebounds. Spot gold closed up 0.84% at $4,378 per ounce, once briefly approaching $4,400 during the day. Oil prices falling eased concerns about a second round of inflation, reducing the pressure on holding non-yielding assets.
Liquidity/capital conditions
ETF: On September 18, the Bitcoin spot ETF saw net inflows of $433 million, and the Ethereum ETF saw net inflows of $143.8 million. Total net assets of the Bitcoin ETF: $102.53 billion.
Stablecoins: Total market cap remains high; buying power from outside the exchange hasn’t shrunk further.
Binance derivatives activity: Binance’s total trading volume over the past 24 hours is about $49.27 billion. BTCUSDT perpetuals lead with $10.64 billion in volume, followed by ETHUSDT perpetuals at $7.16 billion. SNDK (SanDisk) U.S. stock perpetuals: $3.38 billion; XAU (gold) perpetuals: $2.57 billion; XAG (silver) perpetuals: $1.41 billion. Among the top 15 contracts, about two-thirds are TradFi assets.
Flow of funds: Within crypto—altcoins outperform BTC and ETH; NEAR, AVAX, and SUI lead, and money rotates between sectors. Cross-asset—ETFs see renewed inflows; institutional buying returns. TradFi perps—AI chip stocks and precious metals continue to attract capital.
Institution & capital flow
① BlackRock IBIT holdings break 785,000 BTC: Arkham data shows BlackRock IBIT holdings rise to about 785,000 BTC, with assets under management surpassing $60 billion.
② Saylor suggests continuing to add to holdings; total holdings are 845,050 BTC: Strategy founder Michael Saylor hinted he will keep increasing his Bitcoin position. Strategy’s total holdings are now 845,050 BTC.
③ The U.S. House Financial Services Committee is advancing the “strategic Bitcoin reserve” bill: the bill has passed at the committee level, one step closer to formal legislation.
④ Divergence in altcoin ETF flows: Ethereum spot ETF saw $143.8 million in a single day, but for the whole week it still recorded about $140 million in net outflows, ending four straight weeks of net inflows. Funds switch back and forth between BTC and ETH.
Hotspot direction
① For the first time in 45 weeks, the Bitcoin weekly chart stands above the 50-week moving average—this is the most important technical signal today
Bitcoin weekly close price first broke above the 50-week simple moving average since November 2025. Historically, this signal is often viewed as a reference for a bear-market bottom. But analyst Benjamin Cowen cautions that a mere “golden cross” is not enough to confirm a reversal; whether the weekly chart can consistently close above the 50-week moving average is the key.
BTC’s mapping: If this week can hold above the 50-week moving average, the technical picture will confirm the “bear-market bottom” structure, and the mid-term long thesis would hold. If it can’t, this rebound may only be a pulse within a longer consolidation range.
② Altcoins lift off together—NEAR up 22%, AVAX up 17%, SUI up 14%
Layer1 sector up 2.70% over 24 hours. NEAR Protocol up more than 16%–22%, Avalanche up more than 15%–17%, Sui up close to 10%–14%. Jupiter, Sei, Render, and PancakeSwap also recorded solid gains.
Mapping to BTC: Capital is rotating from BTC into altcoins. But Delphi Digital reminds that altcoins outperforming doesn’t automatically mean large-scale new money is pouring in; fundamentally, you still need to distinguish between external capital inflows and rotation of existing capital within the crypto market. If it’s just rotation within existing capital, sustainability needs monitoring.
③ U.S.-China economic and trade talks begin in New York
U.S.-China economic and trade talks began in New York, United States. This is a signal of marginal improvement in U.S.-China relations. Overall, it’s mildly positive for risk assets.
Section 2: Technical setup
BTC: Market sentiment is entering the “greed” zone, with the Fear & Greed Index at 72. On the 4-hour timeframe, price pushed from around 81,000 all the way to 85,000. After breaking through the key resistance at 82,000, it accelerated. The weekly close has returned above the 50-week moving average for the first time in 45 weeks. The 80,000–84,000 area was originally the core resistance, and today it has already been broken. 85,000–86,000 is the first resistance level—today’s high is 85,004, but it hasn’t held yet. Only after it holds 85,000 on increased volume can it open the way to 88,000–90,000. Below, 82,000–82,500 is the confirmation zone for the pullback after the breakout, and 80,000 is strong support. The larger structure turns bullish, but 85,000 needs repeated tests to confirm an effective breakout.
ETH: Breaks above 2,700 and sets a new high since late January this year, up 3.5% intraday. After breaking out of the long-term range of 1,800–2,000, $2,550 is the key support. Resistance is in the 2,750–2,800 zone, while support is in the 2,550–2,600 zone.
SOL: Up more than 11% to above $112, setting a new high since January. Resistance is at 115–120 above; support is at 105–108 below.
NASDAQ 100: Last Friday it rose 0.39%. Chip stocks remain strong—SanDisk is up nearly 11%.
S&P 500: Last Friday up 0.17%, not far from its all-time high.
Gold: Closed up 0.84% at $4,378 per ounce. The fall in oil prices eased inflation worries, supporting gold.
Outlook for today
Core judgment: I think the upside probability is slightly higher, but 85,000 isn’t the end point or the starting point—whether the weekly chart can hold above the 50-week moving average is the dividing line for this rally’s quality.
Three scenarios:
Scenario 1 (most likely, about 45%): BTC ranges and consolidates between 82,500 and 85,500, digesting today’s rally. 85,000 needs to be tested repeatedly before it can hold.
Scenario 2 (probability about 30%): Oil prices keep falling, ETFs keep flowing in, and rotation among altcoins spreads. If BTC rises on volume and holds 85,000, then it can reach 88,000–90,000.
Scenario 3 (probability about 25%): 85,000 meets resistance and pulls back; profits get taken as they rush out, and BTC retraces to 82,000–82,500.
Key variables: This week’s at least 8 Fed officials’ speeches, PMI data, and progress on U.S.-China economic and trade talks. Whether 85,000 can hold depends on whether these variables give it a face.
Trading ideas (for entertainment only, not investment advice)
My thinking: The bias is slightly bullish, but I won’t chase until 85,000 is broken through.
From 74,965 to 85,000—four days, up by 10,000 bucks. 85,000 is a psychological level. If you chase in and it retraces to 82,000, you’re immediately stuck—down 3,000 dollars.
Go-long idea (slightly right-side, wait for a pullback): If BTC pulls back to 82,000–82,500, holds and stabilizes without breaking, go long with a light position. Stop-loss: 81,000. Targets: 85,000–86,000.
Go-long idea (more aggressive, chasing the breakout): If BTC breaks above 85,000 on increased volume and gets confirmation on the 15-minute timeframe, go long with a light position. Stop-loss: 84,000. Targets: 88,000–90,000.
Short idea (slightly left-side, high risk): If BTC rebounds to 85,000–85,500 with clearly decreasing volume and can’t push higher, try a light short. Stop-loss: 86,000. Targets: 83,000–82,500.
Risk warning: 85,000 is an integer psychological level, and it won’t be crossed in one go. Whether altcoins’ rotation momentum can continue depends on whether new money keeps coming in. This week features a dense schedule of Fed officials’ speeches; any hawkish leaning statement could interrupt the current uptrend. Keep position sizing under control.
In one sentence:
Oil prices fall for the fourth straight day. A total of 433 million yuan flowed into ETFs in a single day, and short sellers were liquidated to the tune of $500 million. BTC broke above 85,000, and altcoins took off across the board. The probability of an upside move is slightly higher, but whether the weekly chart can hold above the 50-week moving average is the key threshold for this rally’s quality.
