Coinbase’s early days: a 5-person team faced nearly 20,000 customer service tickets at the same time

On September 15, 2026, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong recalled an operational crisis from the company’s early startup period. He said that at the time, a website vulnerability caused some users’ account balances to display incorrectly, and with a team of only about five people, customer service tickets quickly accumulated to between 10,000 and 20,000, triggering widespread user complaints on social media platforms. Armstrong added that his own phone number was later exposed online as well, leading to a barrage of calls, and the team had to stay up late for multiple consecutive days to fix the issues.
