BTC HAS DOMINATED ALTS OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS
Bitcoin has shown a sharp divergence: over two years, BTC gained 28%, while the median mid-cap altcoin lost 74%; ETH was roughly flat. The figures come from a Glassnode and Bybit report using data through August 23, 2026.
My take: this is not simply a story of BTC rising while altcoins fell. It shows that capital is demanding deeper liquidity and stronger market depth. Cumulative net inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs reached about USD 55.2 billion, versus USD 13.1 billion for Ethereum and roughly USD 29.7 million for Solana. At the same time, leverage is concentrated in smaller speculative assets; PEPE futures open interest is nearly 24% of its market cap, far above roughly 2% for BTC. Long-term capital and speculative capital are therefore moving in very different directions.
I would not call this the end of altcoins. If market liquidity broadens, selected tokens can still recover sharply. But before increasing exposure, I want to see capital actually spread across the market, stronger volume and more durable altcoin performance. For now, I’m watching BTC first rather than trying to predict a new altseason.
What conditions do you think are needed for capital to rotate back into altcoins? If this logic makes sense, drop a follow for more market breakdowns.
