🚨 Koreans buying Bitcoin—cheaper than the rest of the world by 1.53%!

At 00:00 on September 21, Bitcoin on Korea’s Upbit was priced at 110.69 million KRW. At the same moment, a major global exchange quoted it at 112.41 million KRW. The difference between the two was 1.72 million KRW. Converted, that’s a reverse “kimchi premium” of -1.53%. In other words, in Korea—the market that loves leverage the most—BTC isn’t expensive; it’s actually cheaper.📉

Let’s start with the first layer: this isn’t just Bitcoin. Ethereum -1.55%, SOL -1.38%, XRP -1.58%, Dogecoin -1.58%, SUI -1.50%. Nearly all the major coins are in a discount range of roughly -1.3% to -1.5%. This means the entire Korean market is moving outward, not just a single spot move by Bitcoin. And that’s only a few of the top coins—the list of discounted ones is likely even longer.

Now look at the second layer. The kimchi premium has always been a thermometer for Korean retail sentiment. When the crowd is hot and hands are active, local prices can run higher than the global market by a noticeable margin. Now the symbol has flipped direction: one side is still being pushed upward globally, while local prices are getting marked down.

Of course, someone will say that a 1.5% price gap is too small—arbitrageurs can erase it in minutes. That’s true. The spread is narrow, and the costs of cross-market arbitrage are right there on the table. When the gap is small, the profit from simple arbitrage is very likely to get eaten up by fees and exchange rates—so it’s more of a sentiment signal than an arbitrage opportunity. But the gap is an outcome, not the cause. What really matters is that the “steering wheel” of sentiment has already been turned the wrong way.

To be honest, I can’t fully see how far this move can go, but one thing is clear: global prices are rising, while Korea is trading at a discount. This kind of mismatch shows up more in the middle of a rally—not at the starting point.

What’s truly worth watching isn’t how to arbitrage that 1.53%, but when Korean retail traders will buy back the premium from the discount—that’s the bell signaling sentiment warming up.
