It’s not just money this time that Polymarket is being targeted by.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, during its expansion in February this year, Polymarket’s U.S. business was hit by large-scale debit card fraud: criminals linked stolen cards to many accounts and tried to move at least $10 million through betting and withdrawals. During peak payment processing times, more than 80% of deposits were at one point flagged as fraud and refused—far above the roughly 1% industry norm cited in the report. Source: Wu Shuo.
What’s most striking about incidents like this is how risk control, KYC, and anti-fraud capabilities are collectively put under a magnifying glass; for a platform, the faster it grows, the easier compliance and trust can be repriced. From an observer’s standpoint, it’s a situation where one side is the traffic windfall from prediction markets, while the other is regulatory and security costs rising in step.
Which are you more concerned about—whether the platform will repair its risk controls going forward, or whether regulatory trust will be slowed down by this incident?
