MultiversX mainnet has been paused due to a vulnerability attack, and what the market saw first was the words “halted chain.”
In a BlockBeats report on September 20, MultiversX (EGLD) issued an official announcement stating that it has confirmed attempts by an attacker to exploit a VM-level atomicity issue. This attempt has resulted in invalid state changes on the network. The network is currently paused to prevent the incident from spreading further. The development team has prepared a remediation plan and will verify it in a shadow-fork environment. After successful testing, it will coordinate with validators, exchanges, and infrastructure partners to deploy the fix to the mainnet.
The official statement says it is evaluating a targeted restoration approach, while preserving the confirmed transaction history and normal user states, and only handling the invalid state changes related to this incident. What’s more worth watching next are two things: whether the fix can be rolled out smoothly, and when exchanges and cross-chain bridges will resume deposits and withdrawals related to EGLD and ESDT.
