Polymarket is facing renewed scrutiny after a Wall Street Journal report detailed an alleged stolen-debit-card fraud scheme on its U.S. platform in February.

Fraudsters reportedly linked stolen cards to thousands of accounts and attempted to move at least $10M through wagers and withdrawals. At one point, the payment processor reportedly rejected more than 80% of deposits as fraudulent, versus an industry rate near 1%.

The key issue for me isn’t just the size of the attempted fraud—it’s the challenge of scaling a financial platform while keeping payment controls, identity checks and compliance systems ahead of new user growth.

Polymarket says stronger card controls later brought fraud rates back toward industry norms. The reported $10M represents attempted transactions, not a confirmed $10M loss.
