Did you know where the word “boycott” comes from?

The word “boycott” comes from the name of a man: Charles Cunningham Boycott.

🇮🇪 In 1880, in Ireland, Boycott refused to lower the rents demanded from struggling farmers.

In response, the population decided to have no more contact with him:

🚫 Nobody works for him.
🛒 Shopkeepers refuse to serve him.
📬 His mail is no longer delivered.
👭 The residents stop all contact with him.

The case caused so much buzz in the press that “boycott” became a new word to describe this type of protest.

🌍 Today, “to boycott” is used in many languages around the world.
