🚨 ETH jumps 6.5% in a day, back to $2,618—what you should watch even more than the comparable price is where the money is coming from

The Fed just raised rates by 25 basis points, and the Bank of Japan also hiked. The U.S. dollar index is back above 100, and oil prices are still climbing 📈 By normal logic, risk assets should be down—but overnight, ETH returned to the price level from this past January. Honestly, this kind of move going up against macro headwinds isn’t something I see very often this year.
First layer: ETF flows have turned around. ETH spot ETFs ended three consecutive days of net outflows and flipped to a single-day net inflow of $143.7 million. The number isn’t huge, but the direction has changed—whether this is “front-running” or “covering shorts” remains to be seen over the next two days.
Second layer: supply is being locked up ⚙️ More than 40 million ETH are in staking, directly removing them from circulation. The number of holding addresses hit a new all-time high of 207.17 million, and DeFi still has roughly $50 billion in TVL sitting there.
Third layer: it’s not just ETH going up. BTC is back above $80,000. SOL and HYPE each rose more than 10% in a single day. UNI gained about 16%. The entire crypto market cap is back to $2.88 trillion. Think about it: during that week when bad news piled up, the whole market actually lifted by nearly 5%.
Of course, some people have also pointed out that the Ethereum Foundation recently transferred about $2.45 million worth of ETH into an untagged Gnosis Safe, and the destination is unclear. I myself haven’t fully figured out whether this is routine rebalancing or something else—but even for daily trading volume, that amount isn’t even a rounding error.
Anyway, I think on-chain data is more honest than spoken sentiment. Where the money goes, the K-line will eventually tell the story. What’s really worth watching isn’t just this one bullish candle—it’s after the bad news is out, when capital starts selecting which assets to back. One camp says this is the start of a reversal; another says it’s just a bounce from oversold conditions. Which side are you on? 👀
