Musk made a statement on X on September 15: the exponential growth of solar energy will continue until other energy sources drop below 0.1%. Texas has indeed been building the case—ERCOT data shows that in 2024, solar accounted for 10.4% of electricity generation, surpassing nuclear for the first time at 8.4%. Installed capacity rose from 698 MW in 2016 to 37,443 MW in 2025, and its share climbed from 4% in 2021 to 12%. The industrial side is even more concrete: $TSLAB is currently evaluating plans to build a roughly $10.1 billion vertically integrated solar battery cell factory in Fort Bend County, Texas. The district board approved the tax exemption application on September 16. But 0.1% is a slogan, not a forecast—solar is only at 12% right now. Reaching 99.9% depends on energy storage, and ERCOT adds only about 5 GW of new storage per year—off by an order of magnitude. If you were really going to bet, would you pick the battery and components side, or the energy storage side?
