Sam Altman’s World has launched a new application. The name is straightforward: it’s called World Money. Right out of the gate, it’s rolling out across more than 150 countries.

The app can do quite a lot. It supports issuing stablecoins, collecting rewards, and buying and selling digital assets. For transfers, you just need to enter the recipient’s username.

No more worrying over that long address string. It’s way easier to remember than a wallet address. Using it feels pretty much like making WeChat transfers.

Payments are the main focus. It partnered with Stripe. U.S. users can top up directly with Apple Pay.

This app isn’t really a new face. It launched back in May 2023, and since then it’s been cramming in features nonstop. By late last year, it even tested virtual bank accounts—salary deposits would automatically convert into USDC.

The team running the show is called Tools for Humanity, founded by Altman together with another co-founder. The goal is simple: bind identity and money together.

It handles multiple things that banks and payment companies usually do separately. The money is self-custodied, transfers route themselves, and trading is self-matched. And the middle-layer fees? It looks like they’re trying to cut those out.

What’s interesting is that it splits identity and money into two separate apps: one app specializes in verifying identity, and the other specializes in holding wallets and processing payments. Existing users’ accounts are simply migrated over.

The timing is also pretty well chosen. The Fed just raised rates, and the crypto bill is still stuck at the door. But in the stablecoin lane, things are getting more crowded day by day.

Visa is promoting stablecoin cards. Circle built its own chain. Now World is jumping in with its own app again. What these players are really eyeing is the same piece of ground.

However, World’s old problem hasn’t been fixed. The whole “scan for attention, swap identity” playbook has faced controversy that never really stopped. This time it’s turned into a financial app—whether users buy it remains up in the air.

One more very practical point: it relies on stablecoins like USDC to run. Money moves on-chain, and the “hand of the rules” can reach in anytime.

📌 From issuing tokens to issuing wallets—AI giants are all watching payments.
