Lithuania returned to Russia a Russian man who arrived by river and asked for political asylum. The 60-year-old Russian was detained during the daytime on September 17 on the banks of the Neman River in the Pagėgiai municipal area. He swam from Kaliningrad Oblast and, after being detained, requested political asylum, saying that in Russia he is being persecuted for his activity on social media. This is reported by the Lrytas.lt publication.
Information about the man was passed to Lithuanian authorities, including the Department of State Security. After an inspection, it was decided not to admit him into the country. According to a representative of the border service, Gedrius Mišutis, the authorities found no data indicating that the Russian man faces danger back home. That same evening, he was handed over to the Russian side through the Panemunė border crossing.
Lithuania’s Minister of the Interior, Martinas Katelinas, said that the authorities intend to stop similar attempts to cross the border, but each case will be considered separately.
