The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against a cryptocurrency exchange platform based in Tehran, called BitBank, accusing it of transferring hundreds of millions of dollars in currency $BTC to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
According to U.S. authorities, the platform also handled payments collected from ships that purchased passage rights through the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most important oil transit route.
This development indicates an expansion in the use of digital currencies in settlements related to strategic waterways, alongside increasing U.S. regulatory pressure on Iranian entities.
