$NVDAB Why Xenon Pharmaceuticals shares are falling
Xenon Pharmaceuticals shares fell 25.20% in after-hours trading after the company issued a dual announcement combining a long-awaited regulatory milestone with a concerning safety disclosure in its psychiatric drug program. The company submitted an application for FDA approval for a new drug, azetukalner, as a treatment for focal seizures in epilepsy. At the same time, it revealed that it voluntarily halted enrollment of new patients in its ongoing Phase 3 clinical trials for major depressive disorder and bipolar depression.
The enrollment pause follows the company’s analysis of neuropsychiatric adverse events observed in its psychiatric studies—events described as consistent with the known mechanism of action of azetukalner, but not seen in the previously conducted Phase 2 X-NOVA trial for major depressive disorder. The company explained that the halt was implemented as a precautionary measure in consultation with the Data Safety Monitoring Board, noting that patients already enrolled in the psychiatric studies will continue participating in these trials.
