Heeney Capital signs a 30-year agreement with Venezuela to exploit the Chocó gold mine in El Callao

The agreement was signed this Wednesday, September 16, with Venezuelan authorities in Houston, as part of the G20 energy conference.

The Venezuelan authorities signed this Wednesday, September 16, agreements granting the investment firm Heeney Capital —based in New York— operating and export rights for a gold mine in the country.

Washington is encouraging U.S. investment in this OPEC member country and has prioritized the energy and mining sectors to attract new capital for projects seeking to revive the production and export of raw materials, from gold to crude oil, with an emphasis on shipments to the United States.

Heeney has partnered with commodity trader Mercuria Energy for a 30-year gold deal, according to a spokesperson for the firm, who added that the initial investment in the Chocó mine is estimated at up to $1.0 billion.

The mine, an important gold deposit, is part of an industrial complex in El Callao, in the state of Bolívar, in southern Venezuela.

The agreement was signed with Venezuelan authorities in Houston, as part of the G20 energy conference. A similar deal, signed earlier this year, also granted another commodities company, Trafigura, access to Venezuelan gold, Reuters reports.
