Amazon Web Services announced on September 15 that certain customer data stored in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates had been definitively lost, more than six months after Iranian drone strikes damaged its data centers in both regions. In an AWS Health Dashboard update, Amazon said it had exhausted all options to restore the data in Bahrain and in one of the three availability zones in the United Arab Emirates (mec1-az2), after an in-depth assessment, while continuing recovery efforts in the other two affected zones. The strikes, which occurred in March and April, affected multiple availability zones and exceeded the planned capacity of AWS’s regional redundancy systems. As a result, licensed Gulf financial companies that stored their data in these regions to meet local data residency requirements were unable to recover their records.
