S&P Global today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire OpenZeppelin. The latter is a security standard for on-chain finance; its smart contract library has supported more than $3.7 trillion in asset transfers, completed over 900 security audits, and identified tens of thousands of vulnerabilities before code goes live. Most of the market’s mainstream stablecoins and tokenized funds are built on this standard. After the transaction is completed, OpenZeppelin will remain open source and, as an independent unit within S&P Global’s rating framework, will continue to operate. Financial details have not been disclosed. Traditional rating agencies extend risk coverage from the issuing entity to on-chain contract code—another step toward institutional capital entering the market.
