🇸🇻 El Salvador’s Bitcoin holdings have reportedly reached 7,777 BTC, according to a report published September 17.
At the reported market price, the reserve is worth approximately $594 million, while the reported average acquisition price stands around $55,718 per BTC.
That would put the holdings at roughly $162 million in unrealized gains, or around 37% based on the reported figures.
But there is an important detail investors shouldn't overlook.
The headline suggests El Salvador simply continued accumulating Bitcoin through its well-known daily-buying strategy.
However, the IMF's latest review provides additional context: Bitcoin accumulated after its first review was documented as coming from private donations, with no public resources used.
So:
7,777 BTC ≠ automatically 7,777 BTC bought with government funds.
The distinction matters.
For the market, the more interesting question isn't simply how many BTC El Salvador holds.
It's how those additional holdings were acquired, who controls the wallets, and whether the increase represents new purchases, donations, or transfers between existing controlled addresses.
This is where on-chain data becomes more interesting than the headline itself.
Assets most relevant:
• BTC
• Bitcoin sovereign reserves
• On-chain treasury tracking
The bigger question:
Will El Salvador's 7,777 BTC milestone become a template for other countries' Bitcoin reserves—or remain an isolated experiment?
