Federal Reserve rate increase: 16 of 18 officials expect another hike in 2026.

The Fed’s rate rise on Wednesday was not the surprise; what was surprising was the 2027 line on the dot plot. The Federal Open Market Committee raised the target range by 25 basis points, to 3.75%–4.00%, in a 12-0 vote, and 16 of the 18 officials who submitted projections now expect at least one more increase before the end of 2026.

The most significant change is one row lower: the median projection for the end of 2027 jumped from 3.6% in June to 4.1%, meaning the committee’s intermediate outlook no longer includes any cuts next year.

Counting the dots in the Federal Reserve’s own Summary of Economic Projections (September 16, 2026), 12 officials place the midpoint for the end of 2026 at 4.125%, and four at 4.375%. Only two believe the September move will be the last.
