Today HN front page two things bundled together to look at: Neovim received about $800,000 in donations in 2023—$BTC —then left it untouched for three years; on the same day, Zhipu announced in a blog post that they have built their own inference infrastructure, bidding farewell to external cloud services.
At first glance, these two things seem unrelated, but in essence, it’s the same thing: leaving no loopholes. Based on the donation exchange rate, it comes out to about 14.8 BTC. The dev team didn’t cash it out or use it for wages—keeping it for emergencies when a project’s neck is cut. Zhipu’s in-house compute is more expensive in the short term, but what it saves is the exposure that would let an upstream “one sentence” shut off your service.
What the crypto crowd does is aligned with the recent anxieties of AI model companies; fundamentally, it’s the same kind of defense.
