Airdrop Tutorial (Complete Guide for Cryptocurrency Beginners)

An airdrop is the action where a blockchain project team sends tokens for free to user wallets that meet certain conditions. The purpose is usually to reward early users, promote the project, and expand the community. For users, it’s an opportunity to obtain tokens at low cost (sometimes nearly zero cost), but the risk is extremely high and there are many scams.

1. Main Types of Airdrops

  • Task-based / Social-based : Follow X (Twitter), join Discord/Telegram, share/retweet, invite friends, etc. The barrier to entry is the lowest.

  • Interactive-based (the most common, and often higher value):Do Swap, cross-chain transfers, staking, providing liquidity, testnet operations, etc., on the project’s DApp. The project will issue tokens based on an on-chain activity snapshot.

  • Holdings / snapshot type: hold a specific token or NFT at a certain point in time.

  • Points / Farming type:Complete tasks to earn points; later the airdrop will be distributed according to points.

  • Testnet type:Participate in testnet interactions; later there are often rewards.

2. Preparation (do this first)

  1. Dedicated wallet (most important security measure)

    • Create a separate wallet dedicated to airdrops (don’t use your main wallet with large funds).

    • Recommended: MetaMask (Ethereum and EVM chains), Phantom (Solana), OKX Web3 wallet, Rabby.

    • Back up the seed phrase tooffline paper— never enter anything on any website.

  2. Social accounts

    • Set up X (Twitter), Discord, Telegram accounts (recommended: use dedicated small accounts).

  3. A small amount of Gas fees

    • Prepare the native token for the corresponding chain (ETH, SOL, BNB, etc.) to pay transaction fees. Beginners can start with a small amount.

  4. Information sources

    • Official: the project website, official X account, and Discord announcement channels.

    • Aggregators: Airdrops.io, CoinMarketCap Airdrop, DeFiLlama Airdrop, AirdropBuzz, etc.

    • Avoid: DMs from strangers, links to unknown groups.

3. Participation steps (general process

  1. Find and verify the airdrop

    • Only confirm the rules and eligibility criteria and the claim time from official channels.

    • Check the project background (whether the funding, team, and product are real).

  2. Complete the eligibility tasks

    • Follow official instructions (social tasks or on-chain interactions).

    • Stay naturally active and avoid obvious bulk actions (anti-sybil detection is strict now).

  3. Wait for the snapshot / announcement

    • The project will publish the snapshot date or points rules, and then claims will open.

  4. Claim the airdrop

    • You must enter the claim page via the official link (from the website or official posts).

    • Connect the dedicated wallet → check eligibility and allocation amount → confirm the transaction (pay Gas) → wait for funds to arrive.

    • After claiming, you can use a block explorer (Etherscan, etc.) to verify.

  5. Post-claim handling

    • After tokens arrive, you can choose to hold them or sell them on a DEX/CEX.

    • Regularly revoke excessive permissions using tools like Revoke.cash.

4. Core anti-scam safety (must read)

There’s never such a thing as a legitimate airdrop that’s guaranteed:

  • They ask you to enter your seed phrase / private key

  • They ask you to transfer funds and pay an “activation fee / service fee / unlock fee”

  • They get you to claim via DMs / unknown links

Common scam signs:

  • Fake official website (domain has an extra letter, or is missing a letter)

  • Fake customer service chatting privately

  • Suddenly an unknown token appears in your wallet (don’t click any “claim” links)

  • They require unlimited approval or a high-risk signature

Best practice:

  • Always use a dedicated wallet for operations

  • Carefully double-check the URL

  • Read the full transaction details before signing

  • Don’t be greedy; don’t participate in unfamiliar projects that look like they’re guaranteed to make big money.

5. A reality check

  • Airdrops don’t guarantee profit. Many tokens end up with very low value after listing, and Gas fees could even exceed your gains.

  • Anti-sybil enforcement in 2026 (bulk account detection) is extremely strict, and using multiple accounts carries high risk.

  • High time cost—truly high-value airdrops require continuous real interactions.

  • This is not investment advice. Crypto markets are volatile and you may lose all your principal. Please do your own research (DYOR).

For beginners: start with simple task-based airdrops or Launchpool/staking campaigns from major exchanges to learn the process, then gradually try on-chain interactions.

Safety first: your seed phrase is never given to anyone.
