⚖️ South Korean individual investors suffered losses of about $250 million due to stock-trading chat-room scams in the first half of 2026.

Police are investigating 3,506 cases, with a total amount involved of 336 billion won ($246.57 million), up 19.8% in value and 4.1% in number of cases compared with the same period in 2025. The fraudsters took advantage of a sharp rise in the KOSPI and then a 44% drop from the June 19 peak to lure less experienced investors into transferring money.

Why is this noteworthy?
The scheme involved posting comments under videos by experts and financial influencers, then pulling victims into private chat rooms to charge recommendation fees; in June, a cross-border network was dismantled, with 10 suspects arrested and $9.9 billion won taken from 59 victims.

Put simply:
The more crowded the stock-trading advisory chat room is after major market swings, the more likely it is a trap.
