After 5 liquidations, I finally fixed one problem: before opening a position, I stopped thinking about how much I could make.
In the past, it was exactly the opposite.
Once I reached over 60,000 USDT, my courage grew with it. When the market moved, I would chase—position size kept getting bigger and bigger. I thought, “Opportunities like this only come once every few years. If I don’t go all in, I’ll be losing out.” Then the account kept sliding downward. At my worst, I had only 600 USDT left.
Looking back, that period wasn’t about trading skill at all. The market just happened to run in my favor a few times, and I actually believed it was “me.” When I made money, I felt like I’d figured it out. When I lost, I told myself it was only a temporary pullback. The positions became increasingly trapped, and I kept saying, “Wait a bit more,” until I no longer had the right to wait.
What truly changed me was the fifth liquidation.
After that, every time I place an order, I ask myself first: if this trade is wrong, can I afford it? I calculate the maximum loss before deciding how much position size to take. When the price hits the stop-loss level, I don’t tell myself stories, and I don’t use “it’ll rebound soon” to keep myself alive.
There’s another thing I care about even more than making money now: taking profits out.
In the past, if I made 100,000, I’d want to keep rolling it into 200,000. Now that I’ve made what I’m supposed to make, I withdraw it directly. Because as long as it stays in the trading account, there’s still a chance it could turn back into losses.
Many people watch the profit curve. I’m more interested in a different number now: if this time I get it wrong, can I still keep playing? Once you’ve actually experienced liquidation a few times, you won’t believe any “next trade will bring it back” fairy tales anymore.
The market only cares how many chips you still have in your current account. So now I don’t chase every swing, and I don’t think about turning everything around in one trade. Making a little less is fine. At least when the next opportunity comes, I’ll still have money.
