☀️ Morning News · September 17th

On the previous trading day, the S&P 500 fell 0.45%, the Nasdaq was nearly flat, down just 0.01%. Over the past week and month, both have been slipping—overall, U.S. stocks are in a drifting, bearish pattern. This morning, Asia is clearly diverging: the Nikkei 225 rose 1.04%, but Hong Kong stocks opened lower—Hang Seng down 0.94% and the Hang Seng Tech Index down 1.03%. In China, energy-and-chemicals led declines in futures; WTI crude (SC crude) fell more than 5%, sentiment is skewed bearish. The VIX is at 17.7, up 2.97% on the day and up 16.59% over the past month, with demand for hedging rising.

Macro-wise, the Fed’s rate hike has been implemented. “Williams” said financial conditions are not overly restrictive. Goldman Sachs also expects another hike in October—so tightening expectations haven’t eased. The central bank injected RMB 162 billion via reverse repos, fully meeting demand, keeping liquidity ample.

Today, risk appetite will likely tilt lower. Hong Kong stocks and energy-and-chemicals will face pressure. Sectors that may relatively outperform—such as AI chips and optical communications—could have an edge after the market absorbs the rate-hike news.

Overnight Movers:

FLNC fell 18.3% 09-16 Fluence cut guidance again due to delays at its Houston plant (Stocktwits)
AXTI rose 15.5% 09-16 AXT named a co-packaging optics winner (GuruFocus.com)

Previously mentioned: 8 levels, 1 hit so far at entry point:
MSFT long 493.161 has been reached (set up 11 days ago), +0.07% (20x → +1%)

The U.S. Dollar Index rose 0.65% to 100.3, and the 10-year Treasury yield climbed above 5.006% (+1.0 bps). Rate-hike expectations haven’t loosened, so the cost of holding non-yielding assets is higher—this is the line weighing on BTC. BTC is trading at $76,518, up 0.41% over 24 hours. The VIX has risen 16.59% over the past month as hedging demand picks up—but BTC is only marginally higher, not keeping pace with Asia’s 1.04% Nikkei gain. This bounce looks like inertia rather than a return of risk appetite. Don’t interpret a tiny rise as strength.
