Asian stocks rise as Fed decision in focus and oil recovery pauses
Asian stocks rose slightly on Wednesday as investors awaited the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates. Gains in South Korea and Japan helped the region recover from recent losses.
The MSCI Asia-Pacific index climbed about 0.20%, while South Korea's KOSPI index rose 0.90%, and Japan's Nikkei 225 increased 0.60%. In contrast, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 0.20%.
U.S. stock index futures also edged up. Nasdaq 100 futures and S&P 500 futures each rose 0.20%. Markets are pricing in a 92.40% probability that the Fed will raise interest rates by 25 basis points on Wednesday, up sharply from 59.40% a week ago—marking the first hike since 2023.
