Bitcoin was created by Satoshi Nakamoto, a pseudonym whose true identity remains a mystery. In 2008, he published the whitepaper describing a decentralized digital money system. On January 3, 2009, he mined the first block (genesis) and worked with other developers until 2011, when he disappeared.
He never moved the ~1.1 million BTC that he mined. That’s worth more than $80 billion today, untouched for 14 years.
Many names have been speculated on: Hal Finney, Nick Szabo, Craig Wright (who claims he is, without evidence), even a team. None of the theories have been proven.
Why does it matter? The creator being anonymous strengthens decentralization: Bitcoin has no visible leader, CEO, or founder. But those unmoved BTC are a systemic risk unknown.
