The European Central Bank released an announcement today: e-commerce/mobile e-commerce merchants in the euro area can apply to take part in the digital euro pilot program. The pilot is expected to start in the second half of 2027 and run for about 12 months. It will use a beta digital euro that is close to the official version but does not have the status of legal tender; both online and offline payments will be tested.
The application deadline is around October 27 (CET 17:00). There will also be an information session on October 6. Whether the program will be issued or not will be decided after EU legislation is in place.
