During today’s early Asia-Pacific trading session, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index saw a sharp sell-off, falling by nearly 2%. The worst-performing sectors were mainly concentrated in cyclical industries such as chip manufacturing and metals. Kioxia Holdings plunged by more than 9%, while Mitsui Mining fell by nearly 6%. At the same time, safe-haven sentiment in the FX market intensified. The USD/JPY rate retreated from 154.09 at the Tokyo close last Friday to around 153.50, indicating that capital is accelerating into traditional safe-haven assets.

The deep pullback in this Asia-Pacific round of markets was primarily triggered by a sudden escalation of the situation in the Middle East, as well as a pessimistic reassessment of the Federal Reserve’s subsequent monetary-policy path. Investors are keeping a close watch on the potential for an escalation in conflict involving Iran to cause supply-chain disruptions and energy-price spikes. The linked movements between oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields are weighing on global assets’ risk appetite. Earlier market pricing of a more accommodative cycle proved especially fragile in the face of complex geopolitical conflicts.

From the perspective of macro-asset correlations, the spread of safe-haven sentiment has not only suppressed the valuation center of Asian equities, but Japan’s stronger yen has also directly exerted a double squeeze on Japan’s export-oriented large-cap weighted stocks. If geopolitical frictions in the Middle East further push up international oil prices, the risk of second-round inflation could compel the Fed to maintain high interest rates for a longer period, which would drive long-term government bond yields to remain in a high-range, choppy consolidation. In turn, the global risk-asset liquidity environment may face periodic tightening.

For the cryptocurrency market, rising macro uncertainty is far from a positive signal. While Bitcoin is often framed as “digital gold,” amid sudden geopolitical tensions and liquidity being withdrawn, $BTC and other risk tokens typically face first pressure from institutions’ deleveraging operations. Until the situation becomes clearer, crypto assets may continue to trade in a wide-range volatile pattern, and investors should remain alert to downside risks caused by the spillover of panic sentiment.
