🔥⤑ Saudi Arabia has interrupted the operation of the East-West pipeline, a critical oil route, after being hit by drones launched from Iraq. At the same time, the Houthis are strengthening their control over the Red Sea coast.
Saudi Arabia shut down the East-West pipeline (745 miles / about 1,200 km) following a drone attack.
The pipeline was essential to export Saudi oil without passing through the Strait of Hormuz (which remains blocked). It carried between 4% and 5% of global oil supply. The attack came from Iraq; an Iraqi military commander was dismissed after the investigations.
The Houthis (backed by Iran) captured strategic areas on the Red Sea coast, including the city of Mocha and the island of Perim (Mayun), threatening the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Oil closed the week above $100 per barrel.
Donald $TRUMP said that “everything will work out fine” and suggested that Iran is likely behind the pipeline attack. Saudi Arabia would be seeking U.S. military action against the Houthis.
With Hormuz blocked and now the East-West pipeline shut down, Saudi Arabia loses one of its main alternative export routes. The Houthis’ advance in the Red Sea threatens another critical trade route. The result is more pressure on oil prices and rising risk of regional escalation.
