AI development may really need to hit the brakes. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said in a post that AI has started to participate in building the next generation of models. He is worried that, over the next 6 to 12 months, stronger systems could bring serious cybersecurity risks. To this end, he advocates introducing third-party continuous security assessments, pushing leading AI companies toward unified standards, and also limiting the export of advanced chips and equipment to China. He believes a full pause on recent efforts is unrealistic, but more time should be allocated for safety alignment.

Personally, I think slowing down a bit on security validation isn’t a bad thing—after all, the more capable the technology is, the higher the potential costs if something goes wrong. However, how exactly to balance technological competition with security is indeed difficult.

What do you think: should frontier AI proactively slow down now, or is continuing to race for speed more realistic?
