Treasury's Fix Covers 0.4% of the Actual Problem

treasury just tripled its bond buybacks to $6 billion, trying to calm yields that have been climbing for weeks.

yields went up anyway. 10-year hit 4.85%, the highest since 2023.

nobody's surprised by that part it's the headline everywhere today. what nobody's doing is the division.

treasury's confirmed plan is up to $38 billion in these buybacks this quarter. the u.s. alone has roughly $9.5 trillion of debt needing refinancing this year.

run the math and the entire quarterly fix covers something like 0.4% of what actually needs financing.

that's not a small intervention that needs patience. that's a small intervention relative to a problem that's simply bigger than the tool.

and this isn't even the first attempt. back on august 19th, treasury pledged to at least double buybacks, and it worked for a while.

by this week every bit of that relief had reversed, with the 30-year back near 5.27% and the 10-year sitting higher than before the intervention started. so the response to a fix that already wore off wasn't a new fix. it was the same one, bigger.

even bessent's own former mentor, stanley druckenmiller, has publicly criticized the plan, arguing it doesn't touch what's actually driving yields up deficits and debt supply, not a temporary liquidity squeeze.

here's why this matters for gold specifically. gold hit an all-time high in january on fear alone, and it's basically flat for the year since, even with the iran conflict turning real instead of just threatened.

yields are the reason. every time the pressure looks like it might ease, the fix meant to ease it turns out too small to matter and yields find a new high instead.

so the actual test: if the 10-year keeps pushing toward 5%, gold likely stays capped near here no matter how real the war gets. if treasury's buybacks somehow bite despite being 0.4% of the need, that's the first real relief gold's had all quarter.

the tool already told you what it can do. this was its second try, at triple the size, against a problem it was never built to cover.
