#NEAR *NEAR
NEAR Protocol is a Layer 1 blockchain launched in 2020 that aims to make Web3 usable for everyone. The native token of the network is NEAR. Unlike many early blockchains that focused only on developers, NEAR was designed with both usability and scalability in mind. Its main promise is to solve the "blockchain trilemma" by being fast, secure, and decentralized, while also being easy for normal users to onboard.
The key technology behind NEAR is "sharding" through a system called Nightshade. Instead of every computer processing every transaction, Nightshade splits the network into smaller "shards" that process transactions in parallel. This allows NEAR to handle over 100,000 transactions per second theoretically, with finality in about 1-2 seconds and fees that are usually less than $0.01. This makes it one of the fastest and cheapest Layer 1s.
NEAR also focused heavily on user experience. It introduced "human-readable" wallet addresses like `yourname.near` instead of long hex strings, and "meta-transactions" that let dApps pay gas fees for users. The goal was to remove the friction that stops new people from using crypto. Developers also like NEAR because it supports Rust and AssemblyScript for building smart contracts, and it is EVM-compatible through Aurora, meaning Ethereum dApps can easily port over.
The NEAR token has multiple uses. It is used to pay for gas fees, to stake and secure the network, and for governance decisions. Projects in the NEAR ecosystem cover DeFi, NFTs, gaming, and social apps. Flagship projects like Ref Finance, Aurora, and Mintbase helped build the early community.
However, NEAR faces tough competition from Solana, Aptos, Sui, and Ethereum Layer 2s, all fighting for the same developers and users. It also had to rebuild momentum after the 2022 bear market.
Despite that, NEAR’s long-term vision is "a blockchain for a billion users." With continued upgrades, grants for developers, and a focus on AI + blockchain integration, NEAR is positioning itself as the infrastructure for mass adoption. For many, NEAR represents the bet that the next wave of crypto users will come from apps that are simple, fast, and cheap to use.
