Do you have a “half-believing, half-doubting” market view in hand? Teach AI to be your opposing debater

The third hands-on scenario for AI investment research: **Red-team test your own viewpoint**. The most expensive human error isn’t not having ideas—it’s only chatting with people who agree with you. AI can be that ever-persistent opposing debater who never gets tired of you.

**1. Why you need a “pro and con” opponent**

When you hold positions, you can’t help but gather only supporting information: when it drops, you look for good news to comfort yourself; when it rises, you look for good news to reinforce your confidence. This bias can’t be overcome with willpower—it’s solved by process. Charlie Munger said to think the other way around, but no one around you is willing to pour cold water on you every day—AI has no social cost. Ask it for opposing viewpoints and it won’t hurt anyone’s feelings.

**2. How to ask, specifically**

1️⃣ Write your viewpoint in full, including your position and cost basis. For example: “I believe $BTC will strengthen over the next three months. The basis is some data. I’ve already built a position—my cost is __.”

2️⃣ Then use this prompt: “Assume you are a firmly bearish analyst. Present the strongest three to five rebuttals to this viewpoint, and point out the weakest link in my argument.”

3️⃣ The key step: after reading the opposing viewpoints, write down which statement makes you waver. If none of them make you doubt, you’re usually not right—you just didn’t read carefully.

**3. Distinguish two boundaries**

1️⃣ Don’t let the AI give you direct conclusions. If you ask “Will Bitcoin go up?”, it will give you a lukewarm, two-sided, meaningless answer that tries to appease both sides. But if you ask “Please rebut me,” it has a clear task. The value of AI is in combating your confirmation bias—not in predicting for you.

2️⃣ An opposing viewpoint isn’t asking you to liquidate everything; it’s to check whether your position size matches your confidence. If you’re knocked off balance and still insist on holding, you can—but that’s an informed decision. If you haven’t even been asked and you size up heavily, that’s driving with your eyes closed.

This workflow costs nothing. And the tuition you might save in a single trade could be thousands of dollars. In investing, the cheapest insurance is often just asking one more question: “Where could I be wrong?”
