$BTC Liquid This $300 million-level event has just taken another wild turn!
About 85% of the funds converted into BTC have already been returned.
But Blockstream has explicitly refused to pay a “ransom”!
The remaining 598.5 BTC have not been returned yet.
This white-hat controversy is now officially turning into a face-off!
Blockstream said the attacker previously returned about 3,400 BTC—about 85% of the transferred funds—but roughly 598.5 BTC are still outstanding. The company’s stance is firm: assets taken without authorization, and then withholding return unless it’s conditioned as such, cannot be treated as “white-hat,” so it will not pay a ransom to get the remaining money back.
If the remaining BTC continue to be held, Blockstream will pursue recovery through law enforcement, trading platforms, and on-chain evidence-gathering channels. The biggest point of interest has shifted from whether the funds can be recovered to whether the two sides will fully rip each other apart over the final ~15% of assets.
Since 85% has been returned, it’s the last 598.5 BTC that has turned out to be the hardest part of the entire matter to crack.
Blockstream chose not to back down this time—now we’ll see whether the attacker keeps negotiating, or really drags things into a legal battle!
