Owners of Virgin Media 02 are seeking
£600 million in discounts

Both Liberty Global and Telefónica are seeking to achieve cost cuts of around £600 million at Virgin Media O2, as part of efforts by the company’s shareholders to address investors’ concerns about the level of its debt, according to what the Financial Times reported on Friday.

The paper, citing two sources familiar with the matter, said the proposed cuts would come from a mix that includes reducing the number of employees, lowering operating expenses, and capital expenditures.

This cost-cutting initiative comes after a wave of selling that hit Virgin Media O2 bonds during the summer. Investors have expressed concern about the company’s ability to manage its £22 billion debt amid intensifying competition from a large number of small fibre network operators, known as "altnets".
