Understanding price is not enough if you don’t know who is driving the move. Many market traps (bull traps or bear traps) are not organic pullbacks, but events of mass liquidation triggered by leverage in the derivatives market.

1. The key relationship: Open Interest (OI) vs. Price

Open Interest represents the total number of open futures contracts (Long and Short positions that have not yet been closed or settled).

* Price rises + OI rises: Fresh capital enters by buying/opening leveraged positions. The uptrend has strength, but it is accumulating leverage risk.

* Price rises + OI falls: The move is driven by closing Short positions (forced hedging) and not by real Spot buying. It’s a fragile move.

* Price drops + OI rises aggressively: Leverage Short positions accumulate. A scenario prone to a Short Squeeze.

2. What happens during a Squeeze?

A Squeeze happens when price moves quickly in the opposite direction of the majority leveraged sentiment, forcing a chain reaction of stop-loss order execution and automatic liquidations.

* Short Squeeze: Price breaks a key resistance where stop orders from short positions are concentrated. Once triggered, these orders become market buys, accelerating the rise vertically.

* Long Squeeze (Liquidation cascade): A fast sell-off hits liquidation zones for leveraged bullish positions. Liquidations trigger automatic mass selling, deepening the drop within minutes.

3. How to use the Liquidity Map to trade

To avoid entering at the end of a sweep or to trade the confirmation after the breakout:

* Step 1: Identify Equal Highs or Equal Lows zones where liquidation pools accumulate.

* Step 2: Watch the Funding Rate. If it’s extremely positive while price can’t make new highs, Longs are paying very high fees without making progress (an exhaustion signal).

* Step 3: Wait for the sweep (Liquidity Sweep). If price breaks above the key level, it liquidates positions and quickly closes back within the previous range, with OI contracting to confirm a false breakout.
