When you don’t have money, you want a house, a car, and some money—you want too many material things. Consumerist values poison every suffering, struggling ordinary person in China.

After you spend your days, like a hamster running on a wheel, working so hard to obtain everything, only to find it’s really of no use, what I think about now is renting a car for a self-drive trip, renting a place to live in each city for a few years—what I’m always chasing is the simple happiness I once had.

The poor are always careful yet generous, maintaining that fragile façade and dignity. May you and I both be able to step out of the world of borrowing-and-more-borrowing, and be freer than we were yesterday.
