September 10 LIT Watch|Zero-Fee Platform: Where Does the Token Go?

LIT still has plenty of trades today, but the price isn’t rising along with the attention. If Lighter has zero-fee trading, why is there still a token needed? This question is more concrete than looking for a story behind short-term volatility.

For Lighter’s standard account, no maker or taker fees are charged at present. The Premium account charges trading fees, while also allowing users to stake LIT to obtain a fee-rate discount. Taking an un-staked Premium account as an example: the maker fee rate is 0.004%, and the taker fee rate is 0.028%. Here, the token serves to meet the needs of professional users who want to reduce costs—it’s not something every platform user is required to hold.

The official account details also link staking amounts to API capacity. For Premium accounts, the per-minute transaction allowance increases with the staking tier. For users who submit orders frequently, fees and API resources have real significance. For low-frequency users, the appeal of these benefits may be completely different.

So after the trading activity gets lively, what still matters is whether there’s an ongoing demand for these benefits. Higher trading volume doesn’t necessarily mean token demand rises proportionally, and discounts can’t offset token price volatility, liquidity risks, or protocol operational risks. Today, there isn’t enough evidence to attribute the move to a specific new upgrade—there’s no need to invent a definite reason to “fill in” for the market.
