They stole $320 million in Bitcoin... and returned 85% The Liquid Network (a sidechain network of Bitcoin operated by Blockstream, used by several exchanges) suffered the biggest hack of the year so far: they took close to 4,000 $BTC by exploiting a software error, not stolen keys.
The twist is that the attackers identified themselves as “white hats” (ethical hackers), asked for the bug to be fixed, and once it was patched, they returned about 85% of the funds—keeping roughly $47 million as a “reward” they imposed on themselves.
Bitcoin’s price barely moved with the news (it fell only about ~1%), because the issue was with this sidechain network, not Bitcoin’s main blockchain.
But it does leave a lesson: the security of the infrastructure surrounding Bitcoin (bridges, sidechains) is still the weakest point, not Bitcoin itself.
Do you think returning almost everything that was stolen is “ethical,” or is it still a crime? 👇
