📰 The latest quarterly report from the World Platinum Investment Association has directly shifted market expectations from “shortage” to “a slight surplus.”
For 2026, the global platinum market is expected to have a supply surplus of 265,000 ounces, compared with a prior forecast of a shortage of 297,000 ounces. The main reason for the change is not a sudden surge in supply, but a downward revision of investment demand expectations for the full year by 601,000 ounces.
🔥 Second-quarter figures also show a surplus: supply of 1.906 million ounces, demand of 1.663 million ounces, resulting in a quarterly surplus of 244,000 ounces. After three consecutive years of shortage, the platinum market could see a turning point this year.
To be honest, that early-year wave of precious metals investment heat came on strong. Platinum briefly surged to a historical high near $3,000 per ounce, and then the rally quickly reversed—falling by more than one-third from the January peak. Large-scale selling by investors clearly changed the full-year supply-and-demand outlook.
💡 WPIC currently expects a full-year supply surplus of 8.2 tonnes, whereas earlier it predicted a shortage of 9.2 tonnes. It also expects ETF holdings to decline by about 12 tonnes this year. Even if investment demand rebounds in the second half and the market once again runs into a supply gap, it may not be able to make up for the massive outflows seen in the beginning of the year.
🤔 Platinum is shifting from consecutive shortages to a supply surplus—do you think this is a short-term withdrawal of funds, or is market demand genuinely starting to weaken?
