What exactly is driving copper prices to record highs?

When $BTC is still hesitating around $78,000–$80,000, the traditional market has started vying for some attention again.

Copper has become one of the best-performing commodities by price increase.

Copper prices have set a new record high, breaking through $14,600 per ton—but this rally hasn’t started with recent tariff news.

Since April 2025, copper prices have risen by about 68%.

Several forces have been steadily building behind the move:

Supply side: mine aging and various disruptions are making new capacity increasingly difficult to bring online.

Demand side: power grids, renewable energy, electric vehicles, and AI data centers are all becoming more “copper-hungry.”

Tariffs: the U.S. has imposed a 50% tariff on many semi-finished copper products, while refined copper is still waiting for Washington’s final decision.

If Washington expands the tariffs to refined copper, many traders may have already front-ran the right catalyst.

If not, some of the recent price gains may unwind—but the underlying supply problems won’t disappear.

So now copper is caught between two stories: a policy trade that could cool off soon, and a structural demand trend that could last for years.
