Cronos said that about $9.19 million left its network before auditors were able to stop the network exploitation of Tectonic, in an official update explaining what the rollback to the network’s previous state did not cover.

According to a Tuesday-issued post-incident report, the tampered collateral values led to borrowing activity totaling about $120.4 million. After the network was returned to its pre-exploitation state, around $111.2 million was reversed, meaning 7.6% of the affected funds remained outside the network.

This explanation puts the incident’s size into its full context, especially after earlier estimates suggested the affected value was close to $75 million. It also confirms that the amount moved out of Cronos was $9.19 million, a figure higher than the $8.3 million that blockchain data company Bitquery had tracked as having been sent to the Ethereum network.

Previous reports indicated that a single transaction emptied nine Tectonic lending markets through 11 transfer operations involving stablecoins, Bitcoin, Ether, and other assets.

According to what Bitquery reported, the attacker deposited $5 million initially, then repeated borrowing and redepositing the TONIC asset through 98 consecutive cycles, alongside buying a low-liquidity token. This caused the TONIC price to rise by roughly 300 times, while Tectonic’s pricing mechanism followed this move.

Cronos said that Tectonic detected the activity at 12:49 UTC on August 30, and then the validators paused the network at 14:32:47 UTC. Block production resumed later at 23:49:01 UTC after the balances were restored.

In incidents like this, a rollback means reverting the network to a previous state before the exploit—something that helps recover a large portion of the affected funds, but it does not necessarily guarantee that all money that left before the intervention is returned. Therefore, final figures—such as the value of funds that actually left the network—remain a key factor in assessing the impact of the incident on users and on trust in the protocol.
