📰 South Korea’s onshore won stablecoin, KRW1, has been integrated with LayerZero.
BDACS, a South Korean digital asset custody provider, has enabled KRW1 to use LayerZero Labs’ OFT (omnichain fungible token) standard, achieving native cross-chain interoperability. Put simply, KRW1 no longer has to stay on a single network—it can be transferred directly between different chains.
🔥 LayerZero says this makes KRW1 the first won stablecoin capable of native transfers among major DeFi networks. The key point isn’t “another stablecoin has been added,” but that when moving cross-chain it doesn’t need to be turned into a wrapped token first.
To be honest, wrapped tokens always add another layer of conversion for assets, and they can also split liquidity across different networks. After KRW1 adopts OFT, its supply can move across networks, reducing these kinds of fragmentation issues.
💡 This won-stablecoin track is still early, but this integration at least shows that local South Korean digital-asset institutions are trying to plug fiat-backed stablecoins directly into broader DeFi use cases. Whether it can truly drive demand for trading, borrowing, and payments will depend on how it’s adopted going forward.
🤔 Do you think a won stablecoin starting with cross-chain circulation can carve out its own use case?
